Character Design Fundamentals Bootcamp NOV-DEC
4 WEEK LIVE COURSE WITH 10 FEEDBACK SPOTS AND 15 SPECTATOR SPOTS
This class will run from the 18th of November to the 15th of December 2024
- This course has 8 live lectures and 4 group feedback sessions.
- This course will also have one hour-and-a-half mentorship session with each feedback student before the course start date and one after the course has finished.
Hitting invisible walls in your character design process? Are you overwhelmed with the seemingly infinite possibilities allotted to you as an artist? This is a course that will get you connected and informed with what you need to know to move forward on your path to become a professional character designer. This 4 week intensive course will give you the opportunity to create and refine your art fundamentals and character design process from the ground up. Through the 8 lectures focused on the foundational building blocks needed to execute a character design, you will gain an understanding of the relationship between the art fundamentals and your own unique character design process. Most of all, this course will leave you with a lasting attitude of joy, wonder, passion, and the urge to bring your whole effort into your work and breathe life into the characters you design!
Structure:
Lectures will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1PM-3PM EST on Zoom. Participants will be free to ask questions throughout the lectures. All the lectures will be recorded and made available to all participants for the duration of the course and after the course ends.
Group Feedback Sessions will take place on Sundays from 1PM-4PM EST all feedback participants' assignments will receive a full critique in a group Zoom call where participants will be able to ask questions. All feedback will be recorded and made available to all participants during the course and after the course ends.
Individual mentorship sessions will take place on an agreed day of the week and time of day that works for each participant. This will be confirmed before the beginning of the course with each participant. The individual sessions will be 1.5 hours long. They will be a space for participants to explore their goals, struggles, problems, successes, and get on track by having productive conversation and creating solutions through reflection and encouragement, ensuring that each person gets the most out of each assignment. Individual feedback sessions will be recorded and shared only with the individual (personal recording is allowed). Each participant will have one individual session before the course begins, and one shortly after the course ends.
Assignments will be given after Monday's lecture, and are to be completed before each feedback session.
This will give each participant roughly 6 days to complete each assignment (very doable).

- How to have fun while drawing
Week 2 - HOW TO DESIGN
- How to research
- How to structure your ideas
- How to ask better questions and find better answers
- Balancing the literal with the symbolic and how to combine them together successfully.
- Drawing and designing subject matter that you don’t understand
Week 3 - PRESENTATION & REFINEMENT
- Page layout; the how and the why
- How to connect your audience to your ideas
- When to polish and when to stay loose
- Fixing your values and conquering the confusion of color and light
- Consolidating your designs
Week 4 - YOUR STYLE & YOUR ARTISTIC PATH
- Shape Design; the definitive lecture
- Sculpting your artistic voice
- Identifying the pros and cons of your style
- Broadening your artistic horizons
- Learn to set goals that will set in stone your path to becoming a world class character designer!
IMPORTANT
Participants will be developing and exploring their own style, and trying new styles! After each lecture and demo they will be tasked with taking specific and technical design assignments and executing them to the best of their ability. If the participant is not confident in their style and skill, then it's a good thing that this is a class and the perfect place to develop these skills in a safe and encouraging environment.
Goals and Outcomes!!!!!
After 4 weeks, you will have challenged yourself with all developing all the skills that you will be able to build on and use as a springboard into future ideas and learning.You will have refined your process and gained momentum to continue creating characters that are evocative, have depth, and feel alive. You will also develop a hunger for constructive learning, continuing to build your visual library, and expand your knowledge of the fundamentals of art and design. In short, this course aims to "teach a man to fish," rather than "give a man a fish."
REQUIREMENTS!!!!
This intensive course is open to all, and everyone will be able to benefit greatly from the lectures and assignments. However, it would be beneficial for participants to be equipped with a basic knowledge of human anatomy, as well as basic knowledge of the fundamentals of art and design as we will be going into depth on applying these fundamentals to character design.
This course will require a lot of work each week, please make sure you can set aside 5-8 hours a week to work on the assignments to get the benefits of the course.
